Antique Dining Tables

In Georgian times dining tended to be a rather private affair and due to this, dining tables tended to be rather small such as Pembroke breakfast tables or drop leaf dining tables. During Victorian times dining was more sociable and because of this the dining room tables were of the large, extendable varieties leading to vast dinner parties and the dining table became the centre of the home. Antique dining tables could be extended by inserting leaves via a winding mechanism or the slightly earlier pull apart versions. Many of these tables have lasted throughout the years and they are available to buy through antique furniture businesses, they represent excellent value for money as they are built in such a way that the joints and superstructure are certain to last for centuries, at Harbour Antiques we make sure that all the joints on our tables have been thoroughly vetted prior to delivery and clamped as necessary, the casters are all serviced to ensure that the table can be moved with as much ease as possible, the winding mechanism or carcass of the main body of the table is checked thoroughly to ensure extending the table is a pleasurable experience and not a constant battle. There are quite a number of Antique Dining Tables available and they would look fantastic in either period homes or indeed modern homes, we tend to favour the Victorian oval dining table, circular breakfast tables which usually are ideal for medium sized homes where seating 6 is normal, for larger homes the extending Victorian dining tables are more popular and we sell tables that can seat 8, 10, 12, 14 and sometimes more. Regency tables are generally made of superior quality timber due to its abundance, as time progressed timber in large leafs becomes harder to find as trees need a long period of time to grow to their maximum girth. Having said this we have many fine examples of antique dining tables and generally favour walnut, mahogany and rosewood as the timber for our selection. The majority of our tables pass through the workshop and are often traditionally french polished, this is a very labour intensive operation and brings a tired table back to life, we suggest purchasing a good quality surface protector for your dining table to ensure that those inevitable spills or accidents dont mark the surface of your table. Georgian dining tables would never have been french polished as this is something that became popular at the onset of Victorian pieces. Harbour Antiques in Bideford, Devon offer wonderful items for dining rooms including antique sideboards, Georgian sideboard, Victorian sideboards, Edwardian sideboards, Victorian buffets, antique dumb waiters, Georgian sets of 6,8, 10 dining chairs, Victorian balloon back dining chairs, sets of Victorian dining chairs, 4, 6, 8 and Edwardian dining chairs including Hepplewhite dining chairs, Chippendale style dining chairs and Ladderback dining chairs, Georgian d end dining tables to seat 6,8,10,12, Victorian extending dining tables to seat 6,8,10,12, Edwardian dining tables to seat 6,8,10,12 , oval burr walnut tilt top dining table,
