Pair of Late Victorian Spelter figures by Mestais of France A fantastic pair of characterful spelter figures dating to 1890 bronze in colour being cold painted on beautifully turned ebonised circular plinths, each bearing their own brass engraved plaque one labelled Rescue and the other Distress. The lady standing upon a rock in flowing skirt and waistcoat holding a staff and fishing net in one hand and waving a handkerchief aloft with the other. The male figure depicting a 19th Century clothed fisherman again standing upon a rocky platform looking out to sea in a searching manner, adorned with coils of rope and poised to throw a life ring at any moment. Both in excellent unrepaired original condition with a fabulous amount of character. Height 21.5" (male) 22" (female) Width of plinth 7"
